Artists OUT In the Diaspora

Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies, San Francisco State University, San Francisco State University and Diaspora Arts Connection proudly present the second virtual event of “Out in the Diaspora” during the Pride Month, celebrating the Iranian diaspora LGBTQIA community. This event features Dr. Persis Karim in conversation with designer Hushidar Mortezaie and dancer and choreographer Shireen Rahimi, followed by an artistic collaboration between the artists and Shireen Rahimi's dance company.

About the artists:

Shireen Rahimi discovered dance by herself and developed her own relationship with it when she was introduced to the hip-hop scene in the Bay Area. After having been a member of various dance crews on the West Coast, she moved to New York to experience the club culture and vogue scene where she became inspired by the fashion world and Vogue, and developed her own unique style.

Hushidar Mortezaie has been living between the Bay Area and Los Angeles. His work spans the mediums of textile, packaging, graphic design, painting, and fashion. As a fashion designer and visual artist, Mortezaie combines these varied mediums into installation-like tableaus that create a political pop art world of satire and artifice. His work attempts to create a new visual language through graphic design, fashion, and fine art to inspire a new generation of Iranian American immigrants to take pride in their culture.
